Retail

Anonymous staff surveys for retail

For independent shops and multi-store retailers. Find out what your shop-floor team really thinks, store by store, before it shows up as another gap on the rota.

Work out your turnover cost

You see the gap. You rarely see the reason.

When someone leaves a store, the hole in the rota is obvious straight away. Why they went usually isn't.

The reasons people give on the way out are often the easy ones to say, like more hours elsewhere or a better rate down the road. The thing that actually tipped them, the store manager, the Saturdays, the customer nobody backed them up on, tends to stay unsaid.

41.6%

Staff churn in wholesale and retail, the third highest of 20 UK industries.

17%

Only 17% of organisations surveyed calculated what labour turnover costs them.

The retail figure comes from an industry group that also includes wholesale and the motor trade, and like all churn figures it counts temporary contracts coming to an end. Your own turnover may well be lower. What matters is what yours is, and what it costs you. The turnover cost calculator will tell you in two minutes.

What your shop-floor team might not be telling you

  • Their hours. Too few, too many, or never the same two weeks running.
  • Busy days, short-staffed. Saturdays and peak weeks with too few people on, long queues and breaks that slip.
  • Customers. Most are fine. The difficult ones are the ones people remember, along with whether anyone backed them up.
  • Opening and closing alone. Whether people feel safe and supported when they're the only one in.
  • A next step. Part-time staff and students who'd stay longer if they could see somewhere to go.
  • The store manager. For most of your team, the company is whoever runs their store.

Built for retail

Made for stores, shifts and the shop floor.

QR codes for the shop floor

Staff without a work email scan a QR code in the staff room and answer on their own phone. No app, no login.

Every store side by side

See the whole business at a glance, look at any single store, and find the manager whose team stays, so you can learn from them.

Area managers covered

Give area and store managers their own view, scoped to the stores they look after. Managers never see their own scores.

Part-time and weekend staff count too

Everyone gets the same short survey, and every answer counts the same, whatever hours they work.

Christmas temps handled

Your price is set by headcount and checked once a year, so a busy December never pushes you into a bigger band.

Small stores stay protected

A store with fewer than five responses is hidden, never shown as a rounded number, so nobody in a small team is singled out.

The duty to prevent sexual harassment

Since 26 October 2024, employers in England, Wales and Scotland have had a legal duty to “take reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment” of their employees. When your team deals with the public all day, it's worth knowing whether they feel safe at work.

An anonymous survey is one way to hear about problems early, alongside your policies, training and a clear way to report. It isn't legal advice, and on its own it doesn't meet the duty.

Questions

Pulsory for retail

Do shop staff need a work email?
No. Anyone without a work email can take the survey by scanning a QR code you put up in the store. It works on any phone, with no app and no login.
What about Christmas temps and seasonal staff?
Add and remove people as they join and leave. Your price is set by headcount and only checked once a year, so seasonal peaks don't change it.
Can I compare my stores?
Yes. You can see the whole business, look at any single store, and compare stores side by side. Area managers can have their own view, scoped to the stores they look after.
What if a store only has a few staff?
Any store with fewer than five responses is hidden, so nobody can be identified. Where three or more small stores come up short, Pulsory combines them into a single line, but only if together they reach five.
How long does the survey take?
A few minutes on any device. It's 24 questions each January and 8 in April, July and October, plus any questions of your own.
Will store managers see their own results?
No. Managers never see their own scores. Only the people above them do, with exactly the same anonymity protections.
